Should terminally ill patients be allowed to end their lives via assisted suicide?

Learning Outcome: I am learning to express our views on a topical issue using 'Write That Essay'.
Topic: Euthanasia
Agree
Simple Sentence: The right to die is the patient's option not anyone.
The W-Start Sentence: When there's no chance of the patient's surviving, euthanasia should be allowed.
Explore The Subject: Euthanasia, which provides a way to relieve pain for the patient.

Disagree
The Semi-Colon: The commitment of doctors and nurses is to save lives; their job will be undermined if Euthanasia is used.
Adverb Start: Unexpectedly, some people recover.
The EM-Dash: Palliative care-reduces or removes pain. If pain is a problem, palliative care should be used instead of Euthanasia.

Writing Introduction

The novel Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi is about a teenage girl who has latent magic that tried to bring magic back with the help of her friends.

In the text, the relationship between Amari and Zelie helped me to understand the character of Amari. This is because it showed me how she became brave, courageous and loyal.

Essay Pre-planning

I am learning to plan an essay.

  1. What is going to be my ‘key event’?

My key event is going to be Amari stealing the scroll.

  1. Who is going to be my ‘important character’?

My important character is going to be Amari.

  1. What are 3 ways the character changed as a result of this event?

            - She becomes fearless and fights her father
            - She becomes more confident with her choices
            - Her point of view changes as she learned more about the side story of what really happened.

Children of Blood and Bone ll Chapter 76

 Chapter 76 - Amari
“So is it my turn?” Zélie asks. “Is this where you push me?”
I shake my head. “I needed to hear that. I needed you. After Binta died, you
were the first person to treat me like more than some silly princess. I know you
may not see it, but you believed I could be the Lionaire before anyone ever
uttered that name.”
...
“No matter what he did, no matter what you see, believe me when I tell you it
is not forever,” I say. “If you broke me free, you will find a way to save
yourself.”
A message I take from this scene is that Amari still believes that Zelie can bring magic back.

Children of Blood and Bone ll Chapter 75

 Chapter 75 - Zélie

“I could skin Saran alive and I still wouldn’t have my revenge.” I shrug off his
hand. “It’s not about him. It’s not even about me. If I don’t stop him tomorrow,
he’ll destroy my people like he destroyed me.”
For the first time since the torture, I feel a hint of the old fire that used to roar
louder than my fear. But its flame is weak now; as soon as it flickers, it’s blown
out by the wind.
Notice that Zélie is putting her duty before herself, just like King Saran and
Inan. But how are they different from each other?

Zelie is putting her duty before herself because she wants to get magic back. However, Inan is putting his duty before himself because he doesn't want to make the same mistake just like his father.

Children of Blood and Bone ll Chapter 59

 Chapter 59 – Zélie
“How will me coming back to Lagos solve any of that?” I ask. “As we speak,
your father calls for my head!”
“My father’s scared.” Inan shakes his head. “He’s misguided, but his fear is
justified. All the monarchy’s ever seen is the destruction maji can bring.
They’ve never experienced anything like this.” He gestures to the camp, face
alight with so much hope his smile practically glows in the darkness. “Zulaikha
created this in one moon, and there are already more diviners in Lagos than
anywhere else in Orïsha. Just imagine what we could accomplish with the
resources of the monarchy behind us.”
The main Idea from this scene is that Inan wants Zelie to go back to Lagos with him. Inan wants to face his father and tell him that he's misguided. He also wants to tell him that the maji he fought before are not the maji today. However, Zelie feels hesitated to go back because she scared of what's going to happen.

Children of Blood and Bone ll Chapter 56

 Chapter 56 – Zélie
We zip through the crowd while celebrants thrust and shimmy by our sides.
Though part of me wants to cry, I crane my neck to take in the crowd, craving
their joy, their life.
The children of Orïsha dance like there’s no tomorrow, each step praising the
gods. Their mouths glorify the rapture of liberation, their hearts sing the
Yoruba songs of freedom. My ears dance at the words of my language, words I
once thought I’d never hear outside my head. They seem to light up the air
with their delight.
It’s like the whole world can breathe again.
A message I take from this scene is that Zelie found a world where she can breathe again. A place where she can be free and happy.

Children of Blood and Bone ll Chapter 45

 Chapter 45 – Inan
“Your people, your guards. They’re nothing more than killers, rapists and
thieves. The only difference between them and criminals is the uniforms they
wear.”
- A message I take from this scene is that the guards are seen as criminals because of what they've done.

“I won’t let your father get away with what he’s done. I won’t let your
ignorance silence my pain”
With that, she disappears. Her quiet footsteps fade into the silence.
In that moment I realize how wrong I’ve truly been.
It doesn’t matter if I’m in her head.
I’ll never understand her pain.
- A message I take from this scene is that you could never understand someone's pain unless you experience it.

Children of Blood and Bone ll Chapter 43

Chapter 43 - Inan
Now it takes everything to gain control. No matter how hard I fight, the risk of
feeling Zélie’s pain lingers. A constant and growing threat.
A message I take from this scene is that Inan feels uneasy the more he works with Zelie.

(Why is thinking about the truth a “threat”?) - Inan is trying to hide his power because it can be a threat against his father.

Children of Blood and Bone ll Chapter 30

Chapter 30 - Amari

Chaos.
Before this moment, I never truly understood the word. Chaos meant
Mother’s screams before a luncheon. It meant the scramble of oloyes to their
gold-lined chairs.
Now chaos surrounds me, pulsing through every breath and heartbeat. It sings
as blood splatters through the air, snickers with delight as boats explode into
oblivion.

A message I take from this scene is that chaos can mean different from everybody or can be different from what you experienced in life. In this scene, Amari never understood the word 'chaos' since she's always in the palace. The chaos she knows is her mother screaming before a luncheon. She realised that there's a big difference in chaos from what she experience now between her old life.

Children of Blood and Bone ll Chapter 22

 Chapter 22 - Amari

I pause for a moment, aghast at the number of them filling the narrow path. Before today, I caught only glimpses of the labourers brought in to staff the palace-always pleasant, clean, groomed to Mother's satisfaction. Like Binta, I thought they lived simple lives, safe within the palace walls. I never considered where they came from, where else they might have ended up,
"Skies...." It's almost too hard to bear the sight. Mostly diviners, the labourers outnumber the villagers by hordes, dressed in nothing but tattered rags. Their dark skin blisters under the scorching sun, marred by the dirt and sand seemingly burned into their beings. Each is hardly more than a walking skeleton.

This reminds me of people living in poverty.
A message I take from this scene is that we think that all people lived happily. But we never really thought about people living in an unfair life.

Children of Blood and Bone ll Chapter 13

Chapter 13 - Zélie

I turn back toward Amari and try to let it go. But in her eyes, I see her brother’s. I feel his hands choking me.

“I want to trust her—”

“No, you don’t.”

“Well, even if I did, I can’t. Her father ordered the Raid. Her brother burned down our village. What makes you think she’s any different?”

A message I take from this scene is that Zelie wanted to trust Amari because she kinda feels bad for her.  But Zelie hated Amari at the same time because of her father and brother who did brutal things to her family.

Children of Blood and Bone ll Chapter 9

Chapter 9 – Zélie
“Mama, are you okay?”
Tears come to her eyes, spilling into the wrinkles of her dark skin. “It’s been so long,” she whispers. “I never thought I would feel the warmth of magic again”…
“I feel,” she chokes through her silent sobs. “I feel like I can breathe again.”

A message I take from this scene is that Mama Agba finally felt the warmth of magic again because it's been a long time since she felt it. She never thought that magic will appear again.

Children of Blood and Bone ll Chapter 3

Today I am learning to relate to a quote from the story to my experience.

Chapter 2 - Amari
“I am afraid not, Your Highness. I saw it with my own eyes. Their magic was weak, but it was there.”
Skies… What does this mean for us? What shall happen to the monarchy? Are the maji already planning an attack? Will we have any chance of fighting back? Memories of Father before the Raid play in my head, a paranoid man with grinding teeth and forever graying hair. The man who forced Inan and me into the palace cellar, placing swords in our hands though we were far too young
and weak to lift them. The maji will come for you, he warned. The same words every time he forced
us to spar. When they do, you must be prepared.

A message I take from this scene is that the maji are feared by the royal family because of their evil power. They were also jealous of the maji which turned into hate.
- Amari is also scared for the maji to come back because she doesn't want her father to go back to the way he was.

Children of Blood and Bone ll Chapter 2

Today I am learning to relate to a quote from the story to my experience.

Chapter 2 - Zélie
“It’s a diviner tax.” I grip the draped fabric of my pants, still haunted by the guard’s touch. “They came for Mama Agba, too. Probably hitting every home in Ilorin.” Tzain presses his fists to his forehead as if he could smash through his own skull. He wants to believe that playing by the monarchy’s rules will keep us safe, but nothing can protect us when those rules are rooted in hate.

This could be compared to the story of the Power of One where they treat one race differently from the other. In this story, the rules of the monarchy reflect their prejudice to the diviners.
A message I take from this scene is the guards are seen as enemies, not protectors.

SEXXY Paragraph

In English, we have been working on SEXXY Paragraph and the different film techniques. Our task was to write a SEXXY Paragraph about how the technique is effectively used. The technique we wrote about is two-shot.
My group: Me, Shawn and Cole.

S: In this scene, the director used two-shot to show the intense emotions of both characters.
E: We see this when Sergeant Bormann held a weapon against Geel piet’s neck as we see the fear in his eyes.
X: The purpose of this two-shot is to help us see Geel’s Piet emotion as he was getting chocked by a baton. The purpose of this was to also see the guard’s anger as he was determined to kill Geel Piet.
X: This made the audience feel miserable for Geel Piet.
Y: This aspect can be seen later in the movie as to how the guards treat the black people.

Tomorrow, When The War Began: Chapter 22

1. What do Ellie and the others see in Ellie’s shed when they ride up her driveway?
- They saw Kevin, Chris, Robyn and Corrie. Sadly, Corrie was shot in the back.

2. What does Ellie compare this scene with? Why do you think she does this?
- 'What I saw there was like one of those Christmas tables at church with Joseph and Mary and the shepherds and stuff, standing in their positions, lifelike but frozen.' - Ellie
She thought of this because everyone was standing around Corrie like how everyone was standing around Jesus during the Christmas nativity scene.

3. What does Homer suggest the group does?
- They're going to take her in the Hospital. Ring the bell and run like hell.

4. What does Kevin decide to do? What does this reveal about him?
- Kevin decided to stay with Corrie. This shows that he actually cares for her and that he's brave.

Tomorrow, When The War Began: Chapter 21

1. What is it that primarily attracts Fi to Homer?
- Fi said 'He's like two people. He's shy with me but confident in a group.' I also think she's attracted to Homer because he changed a lot.

2. What are Fi’s intentions regarding Homer?
- Fi wants to learn how to farm so she can help him when they get married.

3. Why does this surprise Ellie?
- This surprised Ellie because she never thought how Fi is looking forward with her future with Homer. Ellie also didn't know that her relationship with Lee is much different from them.

4. How do Ellie and Fi feel as they are leaving the scene on their motorbikes? Are these realistic feelings?
- They were both thrilled and happy.

5. Why do you think the group decided to blow up the bridge?
- To stop the soldiers from coming through.

6, How is this exploit different from the other exploits the group has been on?
- It was more dangerous and risky for them.
