Willow bank Trip

Trip to the Willowbank

On the 23rd of May, my ESOL class and I went to the Willowbank Wildlife Reserve. We had to choose an animal to write about for our research project. The animals that I chose is the deer, the horse, and the kiwi.

Fallow Deer
Description
Image result for fallow deerA fallow deer is one of the small breeds of deer. They are mammals which belong to a group called 'Cervidae'. The fallow dear has a range of different coat colors, from brown, black, white and reddish-brown, with white spots on their skin. A male fallow deer is known as buck and a female is called doe. A young fallow deer is also called 'fawns'.
Bucks are known for their impressive antlers, but a female deer don't have one. However, reindeers are the only breed that can grow antlers in a female's head.
Habitat & Lifestyle
Fallow deers are sociable species. They roam freely in the forest with two divided groups - doe and fawns in one group and the buck in the other group. They only converge during the breeding season. Originally, fallow deers are mostly scattered throughout Europe and regions of Asia. Some of them are found in New Zealand, Australia, and some few areas in America. They live in a range of climate from cool to humid to warm and dry areas.
Diet
Fallow deers are herbivores and they eat varieties of vegetation. Such as barks, herbs, buds, leaves, and plants.

Clydesdale Horse
Color & Hair
The most common color of a Clydesdale horse is called bay. They can be brown or black. Some of them can have a white face or have white patches on other parts of their bodies. One thing that they all have in common is the long hair in their ankles. This helps the horses to survive in winter.
What they eat
The Clydesdale breed is herbivores, they eat grass and hay. They can eat about 25 to 50 pounds of hay a day. A mother Clydesdale can produce up to 100 pounds of milk which helps the babies to gain 4 pounds a day.
Size
They can grow over 6 feet or 72 inches. This means that they are taller than an average man. They also weigh about 2,000 pounds which are one ton. Clydesdales feet can be the same size as dinner plates, and their horseshoes can weigh about 5 pounds for each. This is much as carrying a bag of sugar for each foot.

Kiwi

Kiwi is one of New Zealand's native bird. They are flightless birds which belong to a group called ratites(a group of birds that cannot fly). Interestingly, kiwis are nocturnal which means they sleep during the day and active by night. They mainly sleep in burrows or hollow logs. Kiwis have very long beaks which help them to dug worms underground. Most birds have nostril near their head, but kiwis have them at the tip of their beak. They have brown feathers to help them blend into the ground at night. Predators can easily hunt them because they have a strong, musty smell. Though the birds are nocturnal, they can't really see well in the dark because of their bad eyesight. Instead, they use their sense of smell.

A female kiwi can lay the biggest egg than almost any other birds. In fact, the kiwi egg takes 20 percent of the mother's body/weight. However, an ostrich holds the world largest bird egg but, it only takes 2% of her body weight. While in humans a baby can take 5% of the mother's weight.
