'Kaitaki' is Maori for 'the guardian' and this depiction of Ashleigh Sagar is meant as a symbol of protection to the city. The bird on the right is a kingfisher or kotare and is found on the South Island where Christchurch is situated. The owl on the left is called a ruru and they are sacred to Maori culture and synonymous with signs of warning.

1. Why do we look at street art? Why do we stop when we see it? What is our reaction?
- We look at street art because it interests us and it catches our attention.
Hello Faith,
ReplyDeleteGood start on your street art research. You've made a good selection of murals, especially the Kaitiaki on Hereford Street. The two works express very different ideas: one about protecting (native birds) and the other about consuming (cookies). Which do find more unusual / interesting as a public work of art?
