Workshop 3 - How is color used to create the two worlds?

Mood/Atmosphere
Predominant- the most/obvious

Shot 1 - Real World
1) What types of colors are used in each world?
dark/grey, gloomy, cold, sad, lonely, dull, boring, blue, green
Grey/Blue palette

- Coraline's dad is writing
- He is trying focus & she's annoying him
- Messy & unpacked

The color palette in the office is predominantly made up of blues and greys. This creates an atmosphere of gloom, loneliness, and boredom. This is combined with the used of cold light from the window. The director has used this palette because at this moment Coraline feels sad and ignored by her father who is too busy working to spend time with her.

Shot 2 - Other World
1) What types of colors are used in each world?
Colorful, bright, tidy, warm light, red/orange, blue in places
Red/Orange Palette

- it's night
- other father at the piano
- he is waiting for Coraline

In the 'other' office, the predominant colors are red and orange. This combined with the used of a warm light creates a mood of cheerfulness, curiosity, and safety. The director chose this color palette because Coraline has just arrived in the other world and met the other father who wants to spend time with her

At the end of the film, these color palettes have reversed with the other world becoming dark and gloomy and the real world becoming bright and colorful. This shows Coraline changing perspective as she becomes happier at home.

Pic 1
The predominant colors in this palette are grey, yellow, and bland. These colors create an atmosphere of sadness, loneliness, and boredom. The director used these colors to make us feel depressed and lonely like how Coraline felt in the scene.

Pic 2
The predominant colors in this palette are red, orange, and bright colors to create a warm feeling. These colors create an atmosphere of happiness, welcoming, and surprised.
